YouTube Thumbnail Preview and Tester

Upload a thumbnail, type your title and channel name, and see how it looks on the home page, in search, on a phone and in the up-next column, next to other videos. Try up to three versions side by side. Your images never leave your browser.

A mock-up for judging your thumbnail at real feed sizes, not a copy of YouTube. Gray cards stand in for other videos.

How to test a YouTube thumbnail before you upload

  1. Upload one to three thumbnails

Drop in your finished design, or two or three versions you cannot decide between. Each gets a letter so you can tell them apart in the feed.

  2. Add the real title

Thumbnail and title are read together. Type the title you plan to use; the mock-up cuts it at two lines the way the feed does, so you see where it breaks.

  3. Switch layouts and themes

Check the desktop home grid, search results, the phone feed and the small up-next thumbnails, in light and dark theme. Most views happen on phones, so give that one the most attention.

  4. Fix what you cannot read

If the text is unreadable in up next, or the face disappears next to the duration badge, change the design and upload it again.

What to look for in the preview

  • The small size. In up next, your thumbnail is 168 pixels wide in this mock-up. Text you can only read at full size is not doing its job. Three or four words is usually the limit.
  • The duration badge. YouTube puts the video length in the bottom right corner. Keep faces, text and the key object out of that corner.
  • Contrast with the neighbors. The gray cards stand in for other videos. If yours blends in at a glance, push the colors or simplify the background.
  • Dark theme. Thumbnails with dark edges can melt into a dark background. A lighter frame or a brighter subject fixes it.
  • Title and image working together. The title should add something the image does not show. Repeating the same words in both wastes space. Our thumbnail ideas guide has examples.

What the tester checks in your file

Each upload is checked against YouTube’s custom thumbnail rules, from YouTube Help, Add video thumbnails (checked November 2026).

Previewing versus A/B testing

This tool shows you what a viewer sees. It cannot tell you which version people will click. For that you need real impressions: YouTube Studio’s Test & compare feature shows up to three thumbnails to real viewers and picks a winner by share of watch time. It is not available on private, made-for-kids or mature-audience videos.

The preview is still worth doing first. It catches the problems you can spot with your own eyes, like unreadable text or a face hidden by the duration badge, so the versions you put into a real test are all worth testing.

Your files stay on your device

Images are shown with a temporary browser address and are never uploaded, so you can safely test thumbnails for videos that are not public yet. Close the tab and they are gone. The layouts are a mock-up built to YouTube’s proportions, not a copy of YouTube, so small details may differ from what you see in the app.

Make the thumbnail, then test it in a real feed

Short.now’s AI thumbnail studio generates thumbnails from your title, rates them for contrast and phone-size legibility, and previews them next to competitor videos. Included in paid plans.

Questions

Upload the image above, type your title and channel name, and switch between home, search, phone and up-next layouts. It all runs in your browser, so the thumbnail stays private.

Yes. Upload up to three. Each appears in the same feed with a letter (A, B, C) so you can judge them against the same neighbors. Turn the letters off for a cleaner look.

Yes. Tick "Dark theme" to see every layout on YouTube’s dark background, where thumbnails with dark edges tend to blend in.

YouTube Help asks for 16:9 with a minimum width of 640 px and recommends 3840 × 2160. The mobile app accepts files up to 2 MB, YouTube Studio on a computer up to 50 MB. 1280 × 720 is still the safe choice if you upload from your phone.

No. YouTube Studio’s test shows different thumbnails to real viewers and measures the result. This tool is a visual check you do before that, to make sure each version reads well at feed size.

No. The files are read in your browser and never sent to Short.now or anyone else.
