How to use the channel name generator
-
Describe your niche and audience
Be specific: "budget travel in Southeast Asia for first-time backpackers" beats "travel". The more concrete the niche, the less generic the names.
-
Add your name for personal-brand options
If you appear on camera and want the channel to grow with you, add your name or nickname. A few suggestions will build on it.
-
Choose a tone and generate
Bold and fun give punchier names; professional suits tutorials and B2B channels. Press Generate more to add fresh ideas below the first batch.
-
Check the handle before you fall in love
Copy your favorites and search each one on YouTube as an @handle. The steps further down show what to check.
Channel name vs. handle: what is the difference?
Your channel name is the display name people see under your videos. It can have spaces and does not have to be unique. Your handle is the @name in your channel URL (youtube.com/@yourhandle). It must be unique across YouTube.
According to YouTube Help (checked November 2026), a handle is 3 to 30 characters for most languages and can use letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots, but cannot start or end with one of those separators. Handles are not case-sensitive.
The easiest setup is a channel name and handle that match, like "Leo Travels" and @leotravels. That is why the generator aims for names that read well with the spaces removed.
Tips for naming a YouTube channel
- Make it easy to say and spell. People will hear your name in other videos and podcasts. If they cannot type it after hearing it once, you lose them.
- Short wins. Long names get cut off next to video titles on mobile. One to three words is a safe target.
- Niche names help early, personal names help later. "Budget Backpacker" tells new viewers what they get. "Leo Park" lets you change topics without renaming. Some creators combine them: "Leo Backpacks".
- Avoid numbers and underscores unless they mean something. "@leo_travels_2" looks like a fallback, because it usually is.
- Do not lean on a famous channel. Names that echo a big creator look like copies and can get reported.
- Check the name in your language and your audience's. A word that is neutral in English can mean something else elsewhere.
How to check if a channel name is available
-
Search the handle on YouTube
Go to youtube.com/@yourname. If a channel loads, the handle is taken. YouTube Studio also shows whether a handle is free when you try to set it.
-
Search the name itself
Search the display name on YouTube. Even if the handle is free, an active channel with the same name in your niche will confuse viewers.
-
Check other platforms
Look up the same handle on TikTok and Instagram so your Shorts audience can find you there too. If it is taken, try our TikTok username generator for close variants.
-
Grab it everywhere at once
Once you pick a name, claim the handle on every platform the same day, even the ones you will not use yet.
Grow the new channel faster with Shorts
A new channel has no subscribers to show its videos to. Shorts are one of the quickest ways to get in front of new viewers, and each long video you make can give you several.
Short.now cuts your long videos into captioned 9:16 Shorts and can post them on a schedule. See how it works on the YouTube Shorts maker page.
New channel? Fill it with Shorts
Short.now turns each long video into captioned 9:16 Shorts and can post them for you on a schedule.
Questions
Yes. You can generate name ideas without signing up, within a fair-use limit per hour and per day.
No. It is told to avoid famous channel names, but it cannot see which handles exist. Search each idea at youtube.com/@name before you use it.
YouTube Help says 3 to 30 characters for most languages, using letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, periods and Latin middle dots, with no separator at the start or end.
It is not required, but matching names are easier to find and remember. If the exact handle is taken, a small variation such as adding "tv" or "hq" is better than random numbers.
Use it if you are the face of the channel and might change topics later. Use a niche name if you want the channel to be about the subject, or might bring in other presenters.
Yes, you can change both the name and the handle in YouTube Studio, though YouTube limits how often. Changing often confuses viewers, so it pays to choose carefully now.
